Art Lab: Urban Street Art: Map Making + Scavenger Hunt (morning)
In this hands-on lab, students will explore the world of urban street art by creating their own maps and participating in a scavenger hunt. They’ll learn how to identify and document street art in their local area, design creative maps, and use them to navigate a fun scavenger hunt. Along the way, they'll develop skills in observation, design, and collaboration while discovering the art hidden throughout the city.
Minecraft Education Lab: Mushroom Mission Build Challenge (afternoon)
This lab invites students to step into the world of the Mushroom Forest, where a great storm has left the village in need of repair. As they explore the story, students will be challenged to help the mushroom villagers by rebuilding three key structures: a new bridge, repaired homes, and a brand-new mushroom house. Through this engaging narrative, students will use Minecraft Education to design and construct these vital elements, learning both building techniques and game mechanics along the way. The project encourages creativity and problem-solving, with Minecraft Education and block coding woven into the experience This lab promises a mix of educational fun, with free time at the end of each class for further exploration and creativity.
tuesday april 15
Engineering Lab: Sphero littleBits: Invent A Throwing Arm (morning)
Students will use the littleBits Invention Cycle and an understanding of the basics of circuitry, motion and simple machines, to construct a launcher that flings projectiles towards a target. Students will modify their launcher using Bits and other materials to try to make it more powerful or accurate. Results from these trials will be used to create a unique game using their modified launcher. Conclude the activity by hosting a game tournament, where students can explain and share their game, and test out others’ inventions.
Animation Lab: Lego Stop Motion Animation (afternoon)
In this lab, students will explore the art of stop-motion animation using LEGO bricks. They'll learn how to storyboard, set up scenes, and bring their creations to life frame by frame. Using the iStopMotion app, participants will create their own animated shorts, experimenting with movement, timing, and sound. This hands-on class encourages creativity and teamwork while introducing students to the basics of animation. Each student will leave with a completed LEGO stop-motion film they can share
wednesday april 16
Art Lab: Urban Street Art: Photo Collage + Chalk Drawings (morning)
In this class, students will explore the creative world of urban street art by combining photography and chalk drawings. They will capture images of street scenes and create unique photo collages, drawing inspiration from the city around them. Students will also work with chalk to design and draw their own temporary street art pieces, learning about scale, texture, and color in outdoor art spaces. This hands-on class encourages creativity while connecting students to the urban environment through art.
Game Design Lab: Building Platformers with Bloxels (afternoon)
Students will learn how to design and build their own platformer games using Bloxels. They'll explore the fundamentals of game design, including character creation, level building, and game mechanics. Students will get hands-on experience developing unique levels and challenges while being encouraged to experiment with different ideas. By the end of the lab, students will have created their own playable platformer game, ready to share with others. This class is a fun and interactive way to introduce young creators to game design and digital storytelling.
thursday april 17
Engineering Lab: Sphero littleBits: Invent a Self-Driving Vehicle (morning)
Students will use the littleBits Invention Cycle, and an understanding of the basics of circuitry and motion, to construct a self-driving, two-wheeled car. Students will demonstrate their creativity and collaboration skills to remix their prototypes to improve upon and customize their inventions. The activity will conclude with a class car show, where students will present and showcase the best features of their designs.
Minecraft Education Lab: Fable Forge Build Challenge (afternoon)
In this lab, students will dive into Minecraft Education to take on the Fable Forge Build Challenge, where they will craft their own stories within the game.
