EcoWorlds: Earth Science Through Minecraft

Students will embark on an immersive journey through various ecosystems inspired by the groundbreaking series, Planet Earth III, in collaboration with BBC Earth. Utilizing Minecraft Education, participants will explore vibrant environments, from the Arctic tundra to the Okavango Delta, while playing as different animals such as the Cape fur seal, great white shark, musk ox, and Arctic wolf. Through engaging gameplay, students will unlock unique rewards and gain insights into each animal's survival strategies, fostering a deeper understanding of earth science and ecology. The lab will also introduce some block coding concepts, allowing students to enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills while navigating the Minecraft world. This lab promises a mix of educational fun, with free time at the end of each class for further exploration and creativity.

Class Objectives:

1. Explore Ecosystems: Investigate various ecosystems represented in the Planet Earth III Minecraft Experience, gaining an understanding of their characteristics and importance.
2. Understand Biodiversity: Learn about different animal species, their habitats, and their roles within their ecosystems, emphasizing the concept of biodiversity.
3. Enhance Critical Thinking: Analyze survival strategies of various animals and understand the environmental challenges they face.
4. Promote Environmental Stewardship: Discuss human impacts on ecosystems and explore ways to protect and preserve natural habitats.
5. Collaborate and Create: Work in teams to design and present a Minecraft project that highlights an ecosystem and its unique species, demonstrating learned concepts creatively.
